Afonso Henriques definitively conquered Torres Novas from the Arabs and, on October 1,1190, D. Sancho I assigned him the first charter and had his castle rebuilt, which had been extremely devastated. Later, in 1376, D. Fernando ordered its reconstruction, after the wars with Castile. It was exactly around the castle that the first settlement of Torres Novas was constituted.
